The low-back, also called the lumbar region, is a complex area of many spinal bones, nerves, muscles, and connective tissues. It is where almost everyone will experience pain at some point in their life. Reasons for low-back pain can range from a serious injury or inherited disorders to normal wear and tear. The lower back supports the weight of the upper body. Through the normal course of aging, bones lose strength and muscles lose elasticity. It is also natural for the discs between the spinal bones to lose flexibility, making them less effective in cushioning the lower back.
Heavy lifting, stretching and exercise can cause a strain, spasm or sprain in the lower back's muscles and connective tissues. Occasionally, a spinal disc may rupture or bulge outward, causing pressure on the nerves located in the lumbar region. While most low-back pain is the result of an injury, pain may also be caused by a herniated disc, sciatica, or degenerative disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis. Stress, obesity, lifestyle and other potentially serious medical disorders can cause low-back pain.
Our chiropractors draw upon a wealth of knowledge and experience when treating and preventing back pain that can otherwise interfere with nerve transmission, disturb other organ systems, and undermine general health. Our chiropractors also treat tension that can show up as backaches and/or headaches or pains elsewhere in the body.
